What this audience should prioritize

Distributed onboarding breaks when every location has different paperwork, and some countries have no local entity at all. HR needs workflows that branch by site or country while still showing one view of who has started. For hires abroad, the first question is often who legally employs them.

Deel handles the employment question directly. Its employer of record service starts at $599 per employee per month, contractors from $49, and its HRIS is free for up to 200 employees. Statutory employer costs vary by country and sit on top of that fee, and salaries must be funded in advance. HiBob supports multi-country teams of 100 to 1,000 employees but has no native payroll, relying on a payroll hub instead.

Sapling runs separate workflows by department or location and handles offboarding too, fitting companies with 100 to 2,000 employees. Talmundo focuses on consistent content across locations and supports re-boarding for internal moves, from an estimated $5,000 a year. BambooHR, by contrast, does not natively support multi-entity or multi-country structures, so it tends to stall once hiring crosses borders.

Frequently asked questions

Is an employer of record needed to onboard hires abroad?

Only where the company has no local entity. Deel's EOR fee of $599 per employee per month is competitive for a handful of hires, but twenty EOR employees cost $143,760 a year in fees alone. At that volume a local entity is often cheaper.
