greytHR Review: Rupee-Priced HR and Payroll for Indian SMBs

greytHR is an Indian HRMS and payroll product from Greytip Software Pvt. Ltd. that computes PF, ESI, PT, LWF and TDS across all 28 states and produces the filing outputs Indian payroll teams need, such as PF ECR files, ESI challans, Form 24Q and digitally signed Form 16.

It is priced in rupees for small and mid-sized Indian employers: Essential costs ₹2,495 a month and Growth ₹4,495 a month, each covering the first 50 employees, with a 7-day free trial. The vendor reports 33,000+ companies and 3.5 million+ employees on the platform.

The verdict

greytHR is the cheapest credible way I know for an Indian company of 50 to 500 people to get statutory payroll off spreadsheets. The price is published, the compliance outputs are the ones your CA will ask for, and the entry plan already includes payroll and leave.

The trade-off is depth outside payroll. Performance management, expense management and recruitment are add-ons on the lower tiers, and the statutory engine is built for India. If your headcount is split across India and the Gulf, Keka or Darwinbox cover more countries natively.

I would pick greytHR when payroll accuracy is the main problem and the budget is set in rupees. I would look elsewhere when the buying committee wants a talent suite first and payroll second.

Where greytHR fits

Who it suits

greytHR fits Indian SMBs and mid-sized firms, typically 50 to a few thousand employees, whose HR team is one or two people and whose biggest monthly risk is a wrong PF or TDS figure. It also suits manufacturers and multi-site employers on the Growth tier because of biometric, GPS and face-recognition attendance feeding straight into payroll.

What it does differently

What sets greytHR apart in this group is the combination of published rupee pricing and a statutory output list that goes all the way to Form 24Q with FVU validation and digitally signed Form 16 and 12BA. Keka matches the compliance coverage but prices per employee above greytHR; Darwinbox covers more countries but will not quote without a sales cycle.

How it gets bought

Commercially, greytHR sells to the finance-minded buyer. The 50-employee base fee makes it inexpensive for a 60-person firm and still predictable at 500, and the 7-day trial is enough to run a parallel payroll on last month's data. Enterprise buyers will be routed to Premium and a custom quote.

greytHR pricing: Essential, Growth and Premium in rupees

greytHR publishes two of its three plans. Essential is ₹2,495 a month for up to 50 employees and ₹45 for each extra employee. Growth is ₹4,495 a month for up to 50 employees and ₹85 for each extra employee. Premium is priced by sales and covers unlimited employees with most add-ons included.

At 200 employees, Essential works out to roughly ₹9,245 a month (₹2,495 plus 150 × ₹45) and Growth to roughly ₹17,245 (₹4,495 plus 150 × ₹85). Both figures are before add-ons and GST, so ask for a quote that lists every module you plan to switch on.

What changes between Essential and Growth

Essential covers full payroll processing, unlimited leave types, employee self-onboarding and exit, a helpdesk and the greytHR NAVOS AI assistant. Growth adds advanced attendance and shift management, overtime, permissions, geo-fencing and a confirmation workflow.

The practical dividing line is hourly or shift staff. If people clock in at a site, the Essential plan's lack of shift and overtime rules will push you to Growth.

Add-ons that raise the bill

On Essential, Expense Management, SSO and API, greytHR Recruit and the Alumni Portal are paid add-ons. Growth opens more: Performance Management System, GeoMark+, Visage face recognition, GPS Live Tracking, multi-company and Time Sheets. Premium bundles most of these, and greytHR claims it costs about 30% less than Growth with the same add-ons.

greytHR features: payroll, attendance and the employee app

Payroll and statutory compliance

Payroll produces electronic bank-transfer formats for all major Indian banks and supports batch-wise and bank-wise payment release. A direct-debit facility can pay salaries from inside the application.

Tax and filing outputs. Form 24Q with automatic FVU validation, digitally signed Form 16 and 12BA, PF ECR files and ESI challans.

State rules. PT and LWF rules are built in for each state, which saves multi-state employers from maintaining their own tables.

Leave, attendance and shifts

Leave with unlimited leave types is on every plan. Attendance, shift rosters, overtime and geo-fencing arrive on Growth.

Capture methods. Biometric integration, GPS, GeoMark+ and Visage face recognition, with GPS Live Tracking as an add-on.

Payroll link. Every punch flows into one leave and attendance engine and then into payroll, so no reconciliation sheet sits between them.

Employee app and self-service

The greytHR mobile app gives employees payslips, leave balances, claims, Form 16 and tax declarations. HR spends less time answering routine requests.

Helpdesk. A ticketing helpdesk is included from Essential upward.

NAVOS. greytHR NAVOS is an AI assistant that runs tasks from plain-language commands and is included on paid plans.

Security and integration

greytHR cites SOC 2 and ISO 27001 certification. SSO and API access are available as add-ons on Essential and Growth and are included on Premium.

Multi-company. Multi-company support is a Growth add-on for groups running several legal entities.

Alumni Portal. An Alumni Portal for former employees is sold as an add-on on Essential and Growth.

greytHR pros and cons

Strengths

  • Published prices in rupees

Essential and Growth list their base fee, the headcount it covers and the per-employee overage on the pricing page. Few HR vendors in India show this much before a sales call.

  • Deep Indian statutory output

PF with ECR generation, ESI challans, state-specific PT rules, LWF, Form 24Q and signed Form 16 are all in the payroll module. The vendor says the rules are applied across all 28 states and updated automatically.

  • Attendance options for field and plant staff

Biometric devices, GPS, GeoMark+ and Visage face recognition all feed one attendance engine that flows into payroll. That matters for factories and retail chains where attendance drives pay.

  • Payroll throughput at scale

greytHR says its system processes payroll for a single customer with 85,000 employees in minutes, so the product is not limited to small firms even if its pricing targets them.

Limitations

  • Statutory payroll is India-only

The compliance engine is built around Indian law. Employers with staff in the UAE, Saudi Arabia or Southeast Asia will need a second payroll system or a different vendor.

  • Talent modules cost extra below Premium

Performance management, recruitment (greytHR Recruit) and expense management are add-ons on Essential and Growth. A buyer who wants a full talent suite will see the monthly figure climb quickly.

  • Short trial window

The free trial lasts seven days. That is tight for a full parallel payroll run with attendance data, so prepare your salary structures and a sample month before you start it.

greytHR prices in rupees: Essential is ₹2,495 a month and Growth ₹4,495, each covering the first 50 employees, then ₹45 or ₹85 per additional employee. Payroll and leave are on every plan, while attendance and shift management start at Growth, so the tier choice depends on whether hourly staff clock in.

greytHR buying motion: trial and add-on quote

greytHR sells through a self-serve trial and an inside-sales team. Use the trial to test payroll, and use the sales call to pin down add-on costs.

  1. Run last month's payroll in the 7-day trial, because matching your existing PF, ESI and TDS numbers to the rupee is the fastest way to judge the engine.
  2. Ask sales to price your exact add-on list on Growth and on Premium, since the vendor claims Premium is about 30% cheaper than Growth once several add-ons are switched on.
  3. Confirm which states you operate in and ask to see PT and LWF output for each, because state-level rules are where manual payroll usually goes wrong.
  4. Check the attendance hardware you already own against greytHR's biometric integrations, because replacing devices can cost more than the software.
