Humi Review: Canadian HR and Payroll After the Employment Hero Acquisition

Humi was a Toronto-based HR, payroll and benefits platform for Canadian small and mid-sized businesses. On 8 January 2025 it announced its acquisition by Employment Hero, an Australian-founded employment platform, in a cash-and-equity deal valued at over C$100 million.

Today humi.ca returns a permanent redirect to employmenthero.com/en-ca. Employment Hero says Humi by Employment Hero continues to serve existing clients and remains its product of choice for Québec, with full French-language support. New customers in the rest of Canada are sold Employment Hero's own plans.

The verdict

If you are evaluating "Humi" in 2026, you are really choosing between two things: Humi by Employment Hero, which Employment Hero positions for Québec and for existing Humi clients, and the Employment Hero platform itself, which is what the Canadian website now sells. Ask the sales team which one your contract will cover before you compare features.

For a Québec employer that wants a bilingual HR and payroll tool built in Canada, Humi by Employment Hero is still a reasonable pick. Employment Hero describes it as a modern, bilingual platform for French Canadian SMBs. Outside Québec, the relevant product is Employment Hero, which adds its global Employment Operating System, an applicant tracking system, learning, scheduling and a benefits brokerage on top of Canadian payroll with automated CRA remittances.

Wagepoint is the natural Canadian comparison, and the gap is scope and price visibility. Wagepoint is payroll only and publishes its prices (from $20 a month plus $4 per employee). Humi, and Employment Hero behind it, sells HR, benefits, recruiting and payroll together on custom quotes. If all you need is accurate pay runs, T4s and ROEs, Wagepoint is the simpler purchase; if you want onboarding, performance reviews and a benefits broker in the same login, this is the better fit.

What I would watch is change. Post-acquisition, the pricing model moved from Humi's own tiers to Employment Hero's custom plans with a 10-user minimum, and the humi.ca trial and demo links now redirect. Existing customers should ask for a written roadmap covering migration, if any, from Humi to Employment Hero.

Where Humi fits

Who it suits

Québec small and mid-sized businesses that want a bilingual Canadian HR and payroll platform, and Canadian SMBs of 10 or more employees that want payroll, HR, benefits brokerage and recruiting from one vendor with Canadian operations.

It is less suited to employers that want to see a price before talking to sales, to companies needing payroll in several countries from day one, and to businesses under 10 employees.

What it does differently

Humi stands out now mainly through its owner. Employment Hero reports serving more than 300,000 businesses and 2 million employees worldwide, and it kept Humi Canadian-operated after the deal. Few Canadian HR tools of Humi's size combine a local team, a Québec-specific product and a global parent that sells benefits brokerage and managed payroll.

How it gets bought

Strong fit for Canadian SMBs that want an all-in-one platform and are comfortable with quote-based pricing. Weak fit for very small employers under the 10-user minimum, and for companies that only need payroll, where a payroll-only product with published pricing is simpler.

Humi pricing after the Employment Hero acquisition

The Canadian pricing page lists every core plan as Custom, so you need a quote. The add-ons do carry list prices: Payroll at $7 per employee per month with a $70 monthly minimum, Managed Payroll at $30 per employee with a $500 minimum, Benefits+ at $10, the Learning Bundle at $7 and Chat at $2.

Billing is based on the higher of the contractual minimum or actual billable employees, and most plans need at least 10 users. A 6-person company therefore pays as if it had 10.

Rough maths for payroll

For 25 employees, the Payroll add-on alone is 25 × $7 = $175 a month, before the custom HR plan it sits on. Switching to Managed Payroll, where Employment Hero runs the payroll, would be $750 a month at 25 employees.

Ask whether Humi by Employment Hero customers in Québec are on the same price book or on legacy Humi pricing.

Existing Humi contracts

Customers who signed with Humi before 2025 should check renewal terms. Ask directly whether renewal keeps the Humi product and price or moves the account to an Employment Hero plan.

Humi and Employment Hero features for Canada

Payroll for Canada

The Canadian platform calculates payroll automatically and handles CRA remittances. Payroll is a $7 per employee add-on, or $30 as Managed Payroll where Employment Hero processes it.

Québec. Humi by Employment Hero is positioned for Québec's rules and French-speaking teams.

Onboarding and records. Employee management, onboarding and reporting sit in the same platform as payroll, so new-hire data does not need re-entering.

HR plans

HR Standard covers onboarding, time off, certifications, HR documents and ATS. HR Premium adds performance reviews, expenses, learning and scheduling. HR Platinum adds goals, custom fields, SSO and 360 reviews.

Time and attendance. Included across plans according to the pricing page.

Team Chat. A $2 per employee add-on, included in Employment Complete.

Benefits

Employment Hero Canada offers both a benefits brokerage and benefits administration software, continuing Humi's original payroll-HR-benefits combination.

Benefits+. $10 per employee per month add-on, included in Employment Unlimited.

HR advisory. Included in Employment Unlimited.

Humi pros and cons

Strengths

  • Bilingual product for Québec

Humi by Employment Hero is Employment Hero's chosen product for Québec and offers full French-language support.

  • Canadian payroll compliance

Employment Hero's Canadian platform advertises automated CRA remittances and payroll compliance.

  • Benefits and managed payroll options

Employment Hero offers a benefits brokerage, Benefits+ at $10 per employee per month and Managed Payroll where its team runs pay for you.

  • Backed by a larger parent

The acquisition gives Humi customers access to Employment Hero's wider platform while keeping a Canadian team.

Limitations

  • Two products under one brand

Humi by Employment Hero and Employment Hero's own platform coexist in Canada, and contracts can name either one.

  • Custom pricing and a 10-user minimum

Core plans have no list price, and most require at least 10 users, which penalises micro-businesses.

  • Acquisition-related change

Humi's own website, trial and demo pages now redirect. Long-term product plans for Humi outside Québec are not published.

  • Statutory detail is thin on the public site

The Canadian pages mention CRA remittances and payroll compliance, and the Québec page mentions Québec laws, but they do not list T4, ROE or Revenu Québec filings by name. Ask for a demonstration of year-end slips and an ROE before signing.

Humi was acquired by Employment Hero in 2025, and humi.ca now redirects to Employment Hero's Canadian site. The Humi name survives as Humi by Employment Hero for Quebec, with French-language support and Quebec payroll rules, while the wider product automates CRA remittances and statutory holiday pay. Buyers should confirm which product their contract actually covers.

What to ask before a Humi demo

Sales now run through Employment Hero Canada. Clarify product and contract terms early, since the brand change affects both.

  1. Ask whether you will be on Humi by Employment Hero or on the Employment Hero platform, because the two products have different interfaces and Québec customers are steered to Humi.
  2. Get the full per-employee price including the Payroll add-on, since the core plans are custom and the $7 payroll fee sits on top.
  3. Check the 10-user minimum against your headcount, as smaller companies pay for 10 users regardless.
  4. If you are an existing Humi customer, request renewal terms in writing, because migration and pricing changes after the acquisition are not published.
